SAMPLE SCRIPT

A stage hand comes on stage bringing a billboard in front of red curtains SR , that flips over posters. Music is heard from musicals eg. Oklahoma 1943, south pacific- 1949, the boyfriend 1954, gypsey- 1959, cabaret- 1966 oliver- 1968,

Every time music changes he/she patiently flips over poster depicting musical. (The stage hand looks  fed up and bored which will add to comic element.)

Suddenly there is silence and he/she waits patiently finally flipping over the last poster which says theatre closed. He/she looks at his/her watch gathers things and leaves.

From backstage the sound of kids laughing can be heard and the curtains open to a musical number with 'The Lost Children' (all kids that are not in opening scene)  musical medley - eg ‘phantom of the opera’, barnum, me and my girl, city of angels, lullaby of broadway, Hair being the last one as it maybe an unknown show to kids. All of a sudden music breaks the stage goes black & the curtains close again. (Followed by a recording of a news commentary about children mysteriously going missing.)

The kids enter through the audience laughing and joking. Kids all improvise walking through the dark.

The only light comes from torches they are holding and low lighting once they reach the stage.

All- I can’t believe we are doing this? It’s so dark…What was that?….I don’t know… Ssshh…

The kids all come up onto the stage and look out into the audience.

All- I can’t believe we are doing this? It’s so dark…What was that?….I don’t know… Ssshh…

The kids all come up onto the stage and look out into the audience.

Caraleigh- I can see why this place is supposed to be haunted, it’s so creepy and cold..

Olivia- It must have been empty for years…

Rhian- So what’s the story about this place then?

Eleanor- (Intelligent child ) Well apparently it used to be one of the most successful working theatres. People used to travel from far and wide to see the musicals upon this stage.

Michael- It doesn’t look that spectacular, our back garden’s got more character than this.

Maddy- (Wipes her fingers over the banisters and mimes finding cobwebs and shivers.) Whoah.. Bbbrr… could do with a clean.

Eleanor- That was the thing the magic wasn’t visible to the eye… it…

Michael- Oh what are you going on about now?

Eleanor- Well if you don’t want to listen … (Turns in a huff)

George- (Kid walks up behind him and pats him on the back) I want to hear.

Eleanor Oh ok.. The magic wasn’t visible to the eye as it came from somewhere within. ( All the kids start to gather round intrigued) They say that it had a life of it’s own and sort of drew the audiences to it. No one even new who produced the shows as they were always different and only showed for three nights only. On the morning of the third night a new billboard would appear with a new show. No-one saw any actors enter or leave the theatre. What was backstage remained backstage….

Sasha- How did they buy tickets?

Eleanor- First come first served, paid on the door I suppose.

Cameron- So why did it stop?

Eleanor- Well that’s the thing no one really knows. One day the billboards stopped and with them the shows. Back in the 60’s I think.

(Suddenly the torch goes out and the kids scream) Great….(The stage is in darkness)

Ben Oyo- I’ll go and see if there are any light switches working backstage..

Ella- Don’t go on your own.

Ben Oyo- (showing no fear) ok come with me

Ella- (Looking petrified) What on my own?

Ben Oyo- Anyone else? (No one answers.) Looks like it’s just me after all then. (After a time the lights come on) Can some one come and give me a hand? (One of the kid’s disappears behind the curtain and after a time the curtains are pulled open.)

All- Wow! (All kids start looking around a group, Cameron,Taylor, Ella, & Olivia disappear off stage)

Ben Sinclair- Wow? Wow? It’s just an empty stage…

Tilly- Not quite…look

Matt- What’s that? (Goes to look) Oh it’s only a bit of paper (Eleanor goes over to examine the piece all wait patiently for a verdict)

Eleanor- Not quite any piece of paper. After closer inspection it looks like a piece of a billboard.

Michael- Ooooh a piece of billboard…whoopeedooo….Come on there’s obviously nothing going down here… Lets go..

Bryanna- Wait a minute what if there are other pieces lying around

Michael- That would make another bit of rubbish to add to the pile. I’m off.. (Starts to go when a shout is heard from off stage)

Cameron- Look what we’ve found. (A group of kids Cameron,Taylor, Ella, & Olivia enter pushing a box full of old billboards. Maria is concealed behind the box. They put it down and Caraleigh starts to look through the box.)

Caraleigh- (Hands a billboard to a kid ) Hold this….and this….and wait ..look….yes that’s it… now lets see. (Fits missing piece to billboard. Of the sound of music with one piece missing. As the billboard is formed Maria is standing behind it .) Now what if we put the last piece in maybe just maybe (The lights flash as he places the last piece to make the picture complete. The kids holding move aside and off to sides of stage in a trance as if watching the action stage swapping places with the kids doing sound of Music medley and the others become in character of musical as Maria starts to sing)

(Suggested Music) Sound Of Music Medley- Do-Re-Mi / How do you solve a problem like Maria? / 13 going on 14 / Eidelweiss

Kids come out of trance and billboard pieces fall to the floor)

Maddy - Wow, that was amazing…

George- I’m sure there wasn’t that many Von Trapp children? (Scratches head)

Sasha- Who cares how many children, the fact that any of them were here, is crazy?

Michael - Nah that had to be a trick… It had …to be..

Bryanna- Well there is one way to find out. (Starts pulling out more pieces of a billboard and again they are put together)

Rhian- Oh my god, that’s like my favourite show ever! I wish I could be part of that. (Is holding one piece of billboard)

Sasha- Me too (Is holding 2nd piece of billboard)

Maddy- Oh yeah ‘Fame’ (Does a dance move) (Is holding 3rd piece of billboard)

Olivia- Yeah, Can you just imagine (Joins in with some more moves and joins last piece of billboard)

(All others again move aside in trance as spectators)

(Suggested Music)  FAME MEDLEY- Fame remix / I Still Believe / Starmaker

Olivia - Did you see me? (Does a funny dance)

Bryanna - So it seems the magic is real….. Maybe… just maybe… what if….What if it’s not the billboards but our desires and beliefs that make the magic?

Maybe there were no actors because the audience became just that.

Tilly- Mmm ..still seems a bit far fetched…wouldn’t it be safer to say that somehow we have all eaten something a bit strange this evening.
